What You’ll Need to Bake Sourdough Bread at Home

You don’t need a full kitchen overhaul, just a few essentials:

Ingredients:

• 1 cup active sourdough starter (fed and bubbly)
• 1½ cups warm whole milk (105–115°F)
• 3 tablespoons honey or sugar
• 4 cups flour
• 3 tablespoons salted butter, softened
• 2 teaspoons salt

Instructions

1. Mix the Dough
In a large bowl, stir together the sourdough starter, warm milk, and honey. Add the flour and mix until a soft, shaggy dough forms. Let rest for 30–40 minutes.

2. Add Salt & Butter
Add the salt and softened butter. Knead until smooth and elastic, about 5–10 minutes.

3. First Rise
Cover and let rise at room temperature for 4–6 hours. During the first hour, stretch and fold every 30 minutes.

4. Shape & Second Rise
Shape into a loaf and place in a greased pan. Let rise until about 1 inch above the rim, 2–4 hours.

Helpful Note:
If the dough feels sticky, lightly dust (1–2 tablespoons) with flour while working until it no longer feels sticky.

5. Bake
Preheat oven to 375°F. Brush with milk and bake for 40–45 minutes, until golden.

6. Cool
Let cool for 10 minutes in the pan, then transfer to a rack.

7. Finish
While still warm, spread butter gently over the top.
